“Why do we need meaning? How does meaning affect us? What even IS meaning?” We intuitively know that we want meaning in our lives, and that meaning helps us thrive, but we rarely stop to ask: We can find meaning in the sublime, in the absurd, in the dull and dreary, and in the perfectly wretched in life. We can find meaning in every scenario, every event, every occurrence, every context.

Luckily, humans are resourceful – we have infinite ways of finding meaning, and infinite potential sources of meaning. We are all hungry for meaning, for purpose, for the feeling that our life is worth more than the sum of its parts. In a word, each man is questioned by life and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life to life he can only respond by being responsible.” “Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked. If true, your universe is created by the choices you make.Throughout modern history, one of the questions that humans have asked the most is

You enter one universe and an alternative you enters the other. A wilder interpretation – called the many worlds hypothesis – claims that every time you make a decision, the universe replicates itself. In some interpretations of quantum mechanics, the universe only comes into being when we observe it, and the act of observing it actually determines what happens next by forcing reality into one of many possible outcomes. So let us put that comfort blanket aside and ask: in an indifferent and ephemeral universe, does human existence have any meaning at all? In fact, there is no objective evidence for this (see “ Metaphysics special: Can we ever know if God exists?“). Some theologians have even claimed that the pointlessness of life without God is evidence for God’s existence. This is one reason why belief in a god (or gods) is so popular: it softens the brutality of existence by imbuing the universe with meaning. Against this appalling reality, how can a human life have any real meaning? Humans will go extinct Earth and the sun will be destroyed. Even if you make the history books, your contribution will soon be forgotten. When it ends, a few people will remember you for a while, but they will die too. Your life may feel like a big deal to you, but it’s actually a random blip of matter and energy in an uncaring and impersonal universe.
